Bend Police say a man killed himself after stabbing his estranged wife and mother-in-law. At approximately 7:24 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, Bend Police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 3000 block of NW Kenwood Court. The caller reported that the suspect had just stabbed two women and then left the area. The two victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to St. Charles Bend.
An investigation determined that 61-year-old John Leonard Davis had taken his mother-in-law against her will from her home in the 21000 block of Dale Road, then driven to his estranged wife’s home in the 3000 block of NW Kenwood Court. He assaulted and stabbed his wife as well as his mother-in-law at that location before fleeing the scene with his mother-in-law in her black Lincoln Navigator.
At about 7:35 p.m., an off-duty Redmond Police lieutenant located the vehicle at Big Sky Park, where Davis dropped the victim and then drove away. Minutes later, officers found the vehicle parked in the Buckingham Elementary parking lot, and witnesses reported they saw Davis running east through the nearby baseball fields.
Due to the severity of Davis’s crimes and the fact that he was armed and dangerous, the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team responded and conducted a search of the area. Deschutes County SWAT also responded and assisted with the incident.
Multiple K9s from both Bend Police and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office tracked Davis toward the area of Montara Drive north of Big Sky Park. At approximately 9:35 p.m., CERT members found Davis dead north of Big Sky Park. His death was apparently self-inflicted.
