The 2023-24 edition of the Oregon Statewide Report Card is now available on the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) website. This annual look at Oregon’s kindergarten through grade 12 education system compiles key data on students, teachers and schools in one place for ease of access and transparency.
“Learning from this report helps us build a stronger education system that serves every scholar,” ODE Director Dr. Charlene Williams said. “It also ensures we make significant progress toward boosting attendance, improving early literacy and creating a culture of care that includes wrap-around supports.”
Oregon Statewide Report Card
The Oregon Statewide Report Card includes important education outcome data, most of which has already been released in the last year:
- There are 368 unique languages spoken by Oregon students.
- 3,248 Oregon State Seals of Biliteracy awarded to students for the 2023-24 school year, an increase of 257 from the previous year. This is the third year in a row that the count of awarded OSSB has increased.
- The number of women serving as principals increased by 1.2 percentage points to 58.9%.
- For the fifth year in a row, the number of non-binary students increased. There are 2,924 students who identified as non-binary in the fall of 2023, compared to 2,777 the year before.
- Oregon classrooms continue to become more diverse:
- Students of color now make up 41.6% of the state’s K-12 student body, an increase of 0.6 percentage points from the previous year.
- Teachers of color represent 13.7% of classroom educators, an increase of 0.8 percentage points.
- Ninth Grade On-Track rates increased again for nearly all student groups. For the state as a whole, 84.8% of ninth graders were on track to graduate in four years, compared to 83.6% the previous year.
SEED Survey Statewide Report
The Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey Statewide Report summarizes the key findings from the annual SEED Survey that is offered to all students in grades 3-11 across Oregon. Reviewing the SEED data alongside the Statewide Report Card adds nuance and depth to the numbers, helping ODE make connections between the data in the Statewide Report Card and what students are telling us.
The 2023-24 survey captured the voices of more than 169,000 students on topics ranging from their sense of feeling valued and welcome at school to access to learning resources such as computers and the Internet.
Important findings in the report include:
- 91% of students perceive that there are adults at their school who care about them.
- 83% of students agree that they feel welcome at their school.
- 29% of students in grades 3, 6, and 9 reported that they read for at least an hour per day outside of school and homework. Among 3rd graders, spending more time reading each day was strongly correlated with higher levels of English Language Arts statewide assessment proficiency.
- 81% of students in grades 9-11 reported that they have opportunities to interact with business and industry professionals, and 78% agreed that they have opportunities to take courses that will help them achieve their future goals.
