Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels is kicking off 2025 with a new song, “Scissors,” a collaboration with her friend Maren Morris. They sing in the chorus, “You wanna say goodbye? I’m not crying rivers/ If you wanna cut ties/ I’ll get the scissors, baby.” Julia explains how she got the idea for the metaphor.
“I’ve had ‘Scissors’ written down in my Notes in my phone — I just thought it’d be a funny way of saying I’m unbothered,” Julia tells ABC Audio. “You know, just being like, ‘Hey, I’m actually not as sensitive as you might think I am. If you want to stay, cool. If not, I’m not going to cry.'”
In the song’s elaborate video, Julia and Maren play neighbors who realize they’re being two-timed by the same guy.
“She sees that I find this lock of hair in my man’s car that I have just [bought] him,” Julia says. “And she is, like, essentially, ‘Oh hell no.’ And then we tag team and make this man’s life a living hell.”
The funniest scene comes when Julia and Maren, dressed as doctors, stand between the guy’s legs as he lies on an operating table. They take out a giant pair of scissors, then replace them with a much smaller pair — Julia’s idea.
“I was like, ‘I think it’d be really funny if her and I were doctors and she hands me, like, the largest pair of scissors known to man. And I’m like, ‘Girl, no. He doesn’t deserve this pair of scissors.'”
“Her and I have very similar senses of humor,” Julia says of Maren. “So getting to do this music video and us just, like, laughing the whole time was a really wonderful memory.”
Sadly, the home where they shot the video has burned down in the LA wildfires.
