Prior to his death in October 2024, One Direction‘s Liam Payne had completed filming a reality music competition called Building the Band. After he died, plans for the show were put on hold, but now we know when we’ll get to see it.
Building the Band, which features contestants trying to form a music group without ever seeing each other, was hosted by Backstreet Boys‘ AJ McLean; Pussycat Dolls‘ Nicole Scherzinger was a mentor, and Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child and Liam were guest judges. Netflix announced Thursday that the show is on its schedule for this year, though there’s no premiere date yet.
“With incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal — to find the next great music band — the stage is set for an unforgettable experience,” reads the Netflix description of the series.
In other One Direction news, fan-shot video reveals that Louis Tomlinson attended Zayn Malik’s concert Jan. 29 at LA’s Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall. “Tonight is kind of special. An old friend of mine is here supporting me tonight,” he told the crowd, before announcing that Louis was in the audience. Another video from the show reveals that Zayn dedicated two of his songs to Louis.
Zayn and Louis were last together when they — along with Niall Horan and Harry Styles — attended Liam’s funeral in November. Zayn postponed and then rescheduled his U.S. tour due to Liam’s death; it kicked off Jan. 21 in Washington, D.C.
