After Katy Perry announced she was leaving American Idol, some felt that Jelly Roll, who got rave reviews as a performer and a guest mentor during season 22, would be a good replacement. Well, that didn’t happen — but the next best thing did.
The “I Am Not Okay” hitmaker has just been announced as the ABC reality competition’s first-ever artist in residence. In his new capacity, Jelly will work closely with this year’s Idol contestants and offer them guidance as they navigate their journeys. He’s set to step into his role during Hollywood Week.
Jelly says in a teaser, “I feel like I’m giving [the contestants] the energy they need, I’m uplifting, and tryin’ to get ’em goin!” He then proceeds to “uplift” host Ryan Seacrest by slinging him over his shoulder and carrying him across the room.
The new season will mark Carrie Underwood‘s debut as a judge — the former Idol champ is the one who replaced Katy. In addition, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are returning as judges.
Season 23 of American Idol premieres March 9 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. A special season preview will air after the Oscars on March 2 on ABC.
