Bad news for Selena Gomez fans who are hoping against hope that the star will one day release a follow-up to 2020’s Rare — she’s not really that interested.

As People reports, during a conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, Selena said that she’s “ready to just focus on acting” following her experience in the Oscar-nominated movie Emilia Pérez.

I think film and art-making and being around such incredible, talented people that have done nothing but uplift me along the way … I don’t know,” said Selena. “It’s going to be very hard for me to ever go back to music after this.” She also said she hopes Emilia Pérez, which received 13 Oscar nods, is “just the beginning for me.”

Selena’s most recent music release was the 2024 single “Love On.”

During the conversation, Selena also said she’s only watched Emilia Pérez all the way through once, at the Cannes Film Festival. She said when she tried to watch it with her family she got “nervous because my grandparents were seeing me say some stuff.” Selena definitely uses some adult language in the film.

Also during the conversation, Selena addressed the recent buzz surrounding old, controversial tweets posted by the film’s star, Karla Sofía GascónPeople reports that Selena commented, “Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

Among Gascón’s tweets, which have been deleted, was one in which she directly criticized Selena, calling her, among other things, a “rich rat.” Speaking to CNN, Gascón claimed the tweet was “not mine,” adding, “I would never refer to her that way.”
