Attention outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers: The Bureau of Land Management is improving access and management of the diverse recreational activities available in the Thirtymile Creek and the John Day River area. Whether it’s to hunt, fish, camp, or simply enjoy the natural beauty, we want to hear people’s thoughts on how to improve these beautiful areas for everyone.
The project area covers about 20,000 acres of BLM administered land located ten miles southwest of Condon. The BLM has prepared an Environmental Assessment that analyzes the potential effects of three action alternatives to enhance access and recreation options.
“We’re committed to enhancing the experience for everyone who enjoys public lands,” said Stephanie McKinney, Acting Central Oregon Field Manager. “We welcome the community’s insights to help shape a plan that supports the BLM’s mission to ensure that Americans can appreciate the natural beauty of their public lands for generations to come.”
The three action alternatives considered in the Thirtymile Recreation and Travel Management Environmental Assessment include various combinations of:
  1. Alternative Transportation Networks: This involves classifying individual routes based on type, allowable uses, and any restrictions or limitations, including the use of e-bikes.
  2. Recreation Management Improvements: This includes managing the Thirtymile boat launch and its associated parking, as well as improving sanitation and camping areas. There will also be efforts to restore former agricultural fields and improve shade along the John Day River where these facilities will be located.
  3. Route and Access Point Enhancements: This focuses on improving main travel routes with gravel surfacing and drainage, adding more parking and sanitation at access points, and considering locations for rock pits to supply sand, gravel, and crushed rocks for these improvements.
Before making a final decision, the BLM is inviting public comments on the EA, which is available at BLM’s ePlanning website at: https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2012186/510. Comments must be received in writing or via e-mail at the Prineville District office by close of business on March 17, 2025. Please include “Thirtymile” on the envelope or in the subject line. Comments can be hand delivered or mailed to BLM Central Oregon Field Office; Central Oregon Field Manager; 3050 NE 3rd Street; Prineville, OR  97754. Comments can also be submitted on the project website above.
