Registration is open for the Summer Academy at Oregon State University – Cascades, a program for high school students that includes classes, recreation and an introduction to college life.
Summer Academy is a six-day program led by OSU-Cascades staff, faculty and students. It will be offered July 20-25 and July 27 to Aug. 1. The program is for high school students entering grades 10, 11 and 12. Both day and overnight options are available.
Participants will take part in Student Success 101, a series of interactive sessions that explore life as a college student, including student life activities, belonging, health and wellness, and career preparation.
Students who successfully complete the Summer Academy will receive a $500 OSU-Cascades scholarship to be used the fall following graduation from high school.
Participants will select from the following academic tracks. Not all tracks are offered each session.
- An Art+Media+Tech option introduces students to traditional and digital art media including drawing, printmaking, graphic design and interactive media. Participants will explore contemporary art and experiment with approaches to an art project.
- In the Computer Science track, students will learn how computing is at the foundation of so much around us, from social media to artificial intelligence, and how it has transformed how we solve problems, create and connect. Students will explore computing fundamentals through coding, algorithms and innovation, and also develop skills in programming.
- The Outdoor Products option will explore outdoor gear and apparel design. Students will learn how creativity, sustainability and innovation can combine to develop products used to experience the outdoors. Through hands-on projects and industry insights, they will discover the business, design and production facets behind outdoor products.
- In the Engineering track, students learn the basics of mechanics, materials and energy systems while designing and building projects aimed to help solve real-world challenges. Students will work in classrooms and lab settings, and gain an understanding of how engineering can shape our futures.
- A Kinesiology track will expose students to the field of kinesiology with explorations of physiology, muscle function and how energy is used in the body. Participants will spend time in the FORCE biomechanics lab learning how the lab’s technology translates physical activity into data that provides health practitioners valuable information.
Summer Academy participants will enjoy a field trip where they can explore possible future careers by touring a company and hearing from experts in an industry. They will also experience an evening in downtown Bend and a campfire night.
Recreation activities include hiking in local parks and floating the Deschutes River, weather conditions permitting.
On campus activities include outdoor games, board games, playing pool, movies and access to the campus fitness center.
OSU-Cascades students will serve as counselors during each session and support participants as they complete the program.
Summer Academy attendance is limited. Registration is $1,000 for the day option and $1,500 for the overnight option. Fees are inclusive and cover classes and supplies, recreation activities, guides and equipment, outing transportation, and lunch and snacks daily. Five nights of accommodation in the student residence hall are included in the overnight option.
